What our customers say
It was a pleasure dealing with your company. Everything was as expected and you were very easy to deal with, even though we changed our plans several times. The car was fine. We will use your services again and recommend them to friends planning trips to Greece.
Dear Yiannis, our stay at Crete was superb. Thank you for your kindness in all your emails and in the service provided to pick up the car. You are doing a great job with your clients. Your island is amazing!
Everything was great. I'll be back with a big group next spring and I'd love to rent again with you. Thanks for all your help. Everyone was very professional and the whole experience was very smooth.
Choose the right vehicle
The fleet runs from economy hatchbacks to nine-seat vans, so you match the car to the trip. Each class below lists its best use and example models.
| Vehicle type | Best for | Seats & example models |
|---|---|---|
| Economy hatchback | Two adults or short town journeys | 4-5 seats, manual. Fiat Panda, VW Up, Toyota Yaris, Opel Corsa. |
| Automatic car | Drivers who prefer no manual gearbox | 5 seats, automatic. Opel Corsa, Nissan Pulsar, VW Passat, Audi A4. |
| Hybrid car | Lower fuel use on longer island trips | 5 seats, hybrid. Toyota Yaris Hybrid, Toyota C-HR, Lexus hybrids. |
| SUV | Families or travellers carrying more luggage | 5 seats. Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Kona, KIA Stonic, Audi Q3. |
| 4x4 | Mountain roads and higher ground clearance | 5 seats. Lexus NX300 and similar, on approved roads only. |
| Convertible | Two to four people, open-top coastal drives | 4 seats. Audi A3 Cabrio, VW Beetle Cabrio, Mini Cooper Cabrio. |
| Seven-seat vehicle | Groups that need more passenger seats | 7 seats. VW Caddy and similar. |
| Nine-seat van | Groups of up to nine occupants | 9 seats. Toyota Proace and similar; nine occupied seats reduce luggage space. |
Do not choose by headline price alone. A smaller car lowers the daily rate and parks easily in town, yet it limits luggage space for a group; a larger car or van carries more people and bags, yet it raises the rate and can be harder on narrow village roads. Compare luggage space, transmission, fuel type, driver eligibility, excess and road restrictions before you book. To see every model and rate, open the cars in Crete pages.
Driver, vehicle and route requirements
Each booking result states the driver, vehicle and route rules before checkout. The main requirements are listed below.
- Driver age: The minimum age is 21 for credit-card holders and 23 for non-credit-card holders on car groups A, B, C, D, E and FC, and 25 for all other groups. There is no maximum age while the licence stays valid.
- Driving licence: A valid licence issued at least one year ago is required. EU citizens drive on their national licence, while visitors from outside the EU need an International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home country.
- Additional drivers: The first additional driver is free, and each further driver costs 3.50 Euros per day.
- Fuel policy: Return the car with the same fuel level it had at pick-up. A missing-fuel charge plus a 7.00 Euros refuelling fee applies otherwise, and there is no refund for unused fuel.
- Road restrictions: Driving on unpaved, dirt or off-road tracks (for example Balos) is not permitted, and damage there is the renter's responsibility.
- Pick-up area: Heraklion Airport, Chania Airport, Sitia Airport, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda.
- Delivery and collection: Free within 10 km of Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos. Outlying points carry a fee, such as Sitia at 100.00 Euros and Sfakia at 120.00 Euros.
A traveller who cannot meet the age, licence, payment or route rules should choose another class or contact the reservations team before payment.
Compare the two insurance tiers
Crete Car Rental offers two price and insurance tiers. Standard Insurance keeps a non-waivable excess, while Premium Insurance adds a Full Damage Waiver that can remove it. The contract differences are set out below.
| Decision point | Standard Insurance | Premium Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Included cover | Third-party cover, Theft and Fire Protection, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), 24-hour road assistance and all taxes | Everything in Standard plus a Full Damage Waiver (FDW) |
| Excess or deductible | 900, 1100 or 1300 Euros, by car group | The FDW removes the deductible on eligible groups; groups LM, SM, HS2 and HSM are excluded |
| Deposit or card hold | A credit-card authorisation of the excess, held until a damage-free return | A credit-card authorisation still applies, including on Premium |
| Tyres, glass and underside | Not covered; tyres, glass and the underbody stay the renter's responsibility | Covered by the Full Damage Waiver, which extends to tyres, glass and the underbody |
| Roadside assistance | 24 hours a day | 24 hours a day |
| Additional driver | First driver free, 3.50 Euros per day per further driver | Same |
| Mileage | Unlimited kilometres | Unlimited kilometres |
| Cancellation | No fee up to 48 hours before pick-up | No fee up to 48 hours before pick-up |
| Added cost | Lower daily rate | Adds 12.00 Euros per day, or 15.00 Euros per day for larger groups |
Choose Standard when its excess and cancellation terms match your risk tolerance and you accept a 900 to 1300 Euro deductible. Choose Premium when removing that deductible for 12.00 Euros per day, or 15.00 Euros for larger groups, justifies the higher total. The full terms sit on the car rental FAQ page.
What changes the price
The booking result separates the base rate from every mandatory and optional charge. The final amount changes with these factors:
- rental dates and duration
- pick-up and return locations
- vehicle class and transmission
- driver age and additional drivers
- insurance option and excess
- optional equipment
- fuel policy
- one-way return fees
- late pick-up or late return
All taxes, including VAT at 24%, are included, and there are no booking fees. The checkout total and the linked terms show every mandatory charge before payment.
Pick-up locations across Crete
The service lists six named pick-up areas across Crete. Each location page states the meeting point, staffed hours, flight-delay procedure and required documents.
For a full description of every desk and delivery point, open the pick-up locations page.
