Wine and Culture Tourism in Heraklion
Heraklion prefecture pairs three working wineries with Knossos, the most famous Minoan palace on Crete, inside the same central region. Vidiano, Vilana, Kotsifali and Melissaki count among the local grape varieties grown on this soil today, the same ground where a Minoan-era winepress, dated to 1600 BC, was found at Vathypetro in Archanes.
Wineries around Heraklion
Heraklion's vineyards fall under four protection labels. PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) Irakleio covers the wider prefecture, while PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Archanes, PDO Dafnes and PDO Peza mark out three specific zones inside it. Three wineries anchor those zones today.
- Douloufakis Winery sits at Dafnes Village, near Heraklion, and produces wine from Vidiano, Vilana and Kotsifali alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Syrah.
- Lyrarakis Winery grows Melissaki, a grape variety the estate transplanted from the foothills of Psiloritis into its own family vineyard to make a dry wine.
- Domaine Paterianakis farms its grapes organically and calls itself a pioneer of organic wine production on Crete. According to Rental Center Crete, the winery still produces organic Cretan wine today.
The Minoan winepress at Vathypetro
Vathypetro, in Archanes, holds a Minoan-era winepress dated to 1600 BC. The find sits inside the same PDO Archanes zone that produces Cretan wine today, connecting the region's modern vineyards to its Minoan winemaking history.
Combine the wineries with Knossos
Knossos Minoan Palace sits on the hill of Kefala, 5.5km from the city of Irakleio. Hunter-gatherers first settled the hill in the Neolithic Period, long before the Minoan civilization built the palace that later dominated the Bronze Age. Some scholars call that Bronze Age civilization the "Pax Minoica" (the Minoan Peace), describing it as pluralistic, extroverted, sophisticated and peaceful. Autumn suits a Knossos visit best, since visitors avoid the summer heat while they walk the site's ruins.
Getting there
A wine and archaeology day in Heraklion works best with your own vehicle, because the wineries and Knossos sit in different directions from the city center. Plan to rent a car in Crete before you land, since a private vehicle lets you string together Dafnes, Archanes and Peza before finishing at Knossos. Check our fleet for a model suited to countryside roads, then book your car to lock in the pickup time.
