Holy Friday during Greek Orthodox Easter

What happens on Good Friday?

The 'Megali Paraskevi' or Holy Friday, is a sad and quiet day for religious Greeks.

On Holy Friday during Greek Orthodox Easter in Crete, Greece, the atmosphere is one of solemnity and reverence as people gather to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

You will hear Orthodox Church bells ringing in the early morning lamenting Christ's death. There are no parties or happy music playing on Greek radio or TV.

The churches hold services where the Passion of Christ is read and the faithful participate in the procession of the Epitaphios, a decorated bier that symbolizes the tomb of Christ.

The procession, accompanied by somber hymns and candlelight, winds its way through streets and alleys, with people following along, often dressed in black.

The sound of church bells and the scent of incense fills the air, adding to the sense of reverence and awe.

Despite the solemnity of the occasion, there is also a feeling of togetherness and community, as people come together to honor this important day in our faith.

... Easter is a unique experience to live in lovely Crete, Greece!
